Moving and Downsizing Tips That Make Life Easier for Seniors

Downsizing can mean getting rid of possessions and moving to a smaller home. For most of us, it’s an inevitable part of life. Downsizing isn’t something that everyone looks forward to, but it can actually be an exciting process that opens up new possibilities. Below, learn how to make the downsizing process go more smoothly, and discover resources that will make it easier to move and sell your current home.

Downsizing Your Home

In order to truly downsize, you will probably want to buy a smaller home that is easier to take care of. Here are a few things to keep in mind when selling your current home and buying a new one.

● Before you list your house, be sure to stage your home for photos and virtual tours.

Have a plan in place if you’re trying to buy a home while selling your current one.

● Be sure to consult with a lender before you get too serious with your home search.

● If you’re a veteran, check into VA rates for different VA loans.

● It’s also helpful to work with a real estate agent when buying or selling a home.

Downsizing Your Items

An important step in downsizing is to get rid of items that you won’t need in your new home. When you move to a smaller place, reducing the amount of stuff you own will make your home feel less cramped. These tips can help.

● Start with things that are easy to toss out, like items that don’t work anymore.

● If you have trouble parting with items, think about why it’s hard so you can move forward.

● Disposing of items responsibly might also make them easier to let go.

● Asking yourself the right questions can also help you downsize without guilt.

Streamlining Your Move

The act of packing up and moving can be the most stressful part of the downsizing process. However, there are a few things you can do to make things go more smoothly.

● Due to the pandemic, it’s important to research your movers farther in advance.

● Make a budget for moving so you know what costs to expect.

● You can save money by packing boxes yourself.

● Having an unpacking plan can help you settle into your new place more quickly.

Downsizing is a huge process with lots of work involved. Luckily, steps such as decluttering can streamline other parts of the process. While downsizing is difficult, keep in mind that it also makes your home easier to manage and allows you to focus on the things that matter most to you.
