How to Appeal your Tax Assessment

May 16, 20252 min read

First- check your due date!

There is a 45 day appeal period, so appealing your tax assessment is VERY TIME SENSITIVE. Appraisal staff is located at all Fulton County offices in order to answer your questions! There is a list of the offices at the bottom of this article. The Fulton County Board of Assessors website says that this process can take time, and if your tax bills are mailed before it is resolved you must pay it in full to avoid penalties.

Another note - if you cannot find your notice of assessment, you can locate this online. If a home's fair market has substantially increased it is in your best interest to make an appeal. You can represent yourself or hire someone to do so. In some places of fulton county properties were not assessed in previous years, so 2018 could show large increase. That large increase would have been to cover two years, instead of the usual one. Keep that in mind during your appeal process.

Read below on your next steps to appeal your tax assessment.

How to Appeal Your Tax Assessment:

You can choose to file manually in which the form is attached HERE or online. Online forms will be processed and received more quickly so keep that in mind when you make your decision. The online form can be found through this link. If you decide to manually file you it is recommended that you use certified mail for proof of delivery. The date of postmark must be by the due date printed on your tax assessment.

Electronic Filing: Once you submit the appeal you will not be able to make any changes. Therefore, it is imperative that you correctly and fully fill it out before submitting it. You will receive your filing number through email once it is submitted.

Manual Filing: There is an option to mail the completed form to the Fulton Country Tax Assessor's Office or to hand-deliver the form.

If you decide to write an appeal letter instead of the form it is important to include the following information: property ID number, property address, telephone number, your appeal method, estimate of the value of the property as of 1/1/2018, and specify the percent to be billed at while the appeal is being resolved.
